Festive Season? A Gentle Reminder

As we approach Christmas and the end of another year, we may find tension creeping up in our lives mentally, spiritually, and physically. This is not an easy time for everyone. There is so much to do, so much to prepare for, and a lot of fretting mixed with reflection, nostalgia, and even depression as we look back on the year fast slipping away from us. We may be anticipating family get-togethers or being alone.

Singing may also be a part of your journey through what can be a frenetic period. There may be a sense of pressure to live up to the ideals of the festive season, to maintain a positive face, sing perfectly, attend jovial gatherings, or participate in others ways when we may not always feel like it. It takes a lot of energy to keep all that up!

The reality for many of us is that things have been tough for a few years now. While this time of year is wonderful in many ways and can lift our mood, sometimes all we may feel like doing is lie down and sleep it all off! It is imperative that we find ways to get through with not only our voices but also our whole selves intact.

Why not try something different this year? Be gentle to yourself! Give yourself permission to take mini-retreats away to withdraw, regroup, and chill out.

Be gentle with your spirit. If this has been a difficult year for you and you don’t feel like participating in so many things, perhaps consider cutting back. Try meditation, prayer, uplifting reading, gardening, walking in nature, or places to stay still in an atmosphere of tranquillity. As the saying goes, the simple things in life are often the best.

Be gentle with your voice. If you are preparing to sing a lot, ensure that you always rehearse gently (in singing we use marking to help with this). Take breaks. Never force, push, or apply tension where it is not wanted (for example, no tension at all in the throat – no pain). Use your vocal,  body, and inner energy wisely. Always ensure that your body is well supported before you sing (i.e. core work). Take time to breathe and calm your mind as well as your body; there is no need to rush.

Be gentle with your body. Take deep breaths. Incorporate daily exercise (you don’t need to do this vigorously). Stretch. Nourish yourself with healthy refreshments. Sleep well and sleep enough. A happy body equals a happy voice.

I hope this helps! Remember, everything is connected so start looking after YOU today!

Sometimes in life we need to pause and take time to buddy up with someone who can be our champion or a second pair of ears, to listen to our hearts, hear us out, offer a new perspective, build connection, and find community.  Before we know it, a whole new world of love and learning can then open up for us.

Fresh beginnings await us around every corner, if we know where to look.
