Stones of stability

Finding stability

The world is in a very unstable space right now. At the time of writing this post there are several conflicts raging which threaten to worsen, and many of us can sense that we are living in a tinderbox moment.

No matter where we live, world events shape us, and if we are particularly sensitive (as in empathetic, a ‘feeler’, an introvert, or acutely spiritual), we may profoundly experience this instability in our souls and minds. The news is everywhere; it seems we can hardly avoid it. This can certainly affect our ability to express ourselves with ease when it comes to singing. A lack of personal peace absolutely shows up in our voices.

How can we think about navigating all of this in a positive way? How can we turn the negative energy around us – which may cause an internal tsunami of turmoil or blockages in our artistry – to our advantage, and produce positive results?

We first need to work on cultivating stability inside us. We can set ourselves up for affirmative creative (and life) outcomes by recognising and pacifying the chaos churning in our inner world, that is, in our immediate sphere. We need a solid foundation to support us when our external world shakes.

Begin with finding time daily for stillness, meditation, and prayer.

It could be as little as five to ten minutes or up to one hour. I usually do what is called a 'Holy Hour' in the mornings when my world is not fully awake, and/or before bed at night. Encouraged by Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, the purpose of this hour (amongst other things) is to nurture a more intimate relationship with Christ, who is the Source of peace and love in all things. You may think this has nothing to do with singing, but rooted in faith, I personally find this gives me firmer ground to stand on when I come to sing.

I start by lighting a candle in a dark room, which helps me to relax, focus, and settle in. In stillness and prayer (or silence), you gradually perceive that God lives in you and He is in control of everything. What could be better than knowing that?

Beginning each day in this way engenders a calm soul and mind. Imagine that you are retreating deeper within yourself to connect with the eternal Presence and light of God. I know that might sound a little 'woo-woo' but it does work so be patient! Breathing is a huge part of this process as you quieten down. This will also help you later on in the day when you come to sing, of course!

Bel Canto, as taught by my teacher and now as I teach it, incorporates exercises that are not only beneficial for your physical instrument (your body, muscles, and internal structure), but also your overall relaxation. It accentuates stillness, inner stability, and self-kindness. You learn that your brain and mindset has more power than you realise, without you having to actually force anything to happen!

So when it comes to singing and coping with an unstable world, regularly applying what I suggest in this post can result in a greater sense of serenity, self-compassion, and ease. You may not call it a 'Holy Hour' as such – that’s fine. Either way, adding this practice to Bel Canto methodology allows your beautiful, unique, God-given voice to effortlessly emerge from a space of stillness and gentle open stable structure.

Stability = calm mind = calm voice = calm world!
