How often have you dreamed about accomplishing something “one day”, but found yourself passing another year without doing it?
I know. Life events happen, there is so much to do, and time simply slips from our fingers…
Do you realise that how we communicate has a lot to do with achieving what we desire?
What do you say to yourself each day?
How do you speak with others?
How do you come across as a singer or speaker? Too forceful, whispery, timid, feeling tight inside?
When you listen to your voice what are you thinking? Is your internal conversation encouraging or disparaging? Let us consider how powerful your external and internal voice (self-talk) is. Perhaps you cringe at this, but most of us take our personal communication skills for granted. Developing our singing, speaking, and self-talk seems a bit nonsensical to our rational selves, but it is not so!
We all want to reach the hearts and minds of our listeners as we sing or speak. We all have something important to say, but for many of us our lifelong encounters with others may have left us shattered in some way, so we close in. We shut down. We bury our voices. We keep to ourselves.
Have you found yourself saying or even thinking any of the following?:
- “Why am I not heard?”
- “How can I get this across?
- “Do you hear what I am saying?”
- “I’m not sure how to say/sing this…”
- “My voice is terrible!”
Today I want you to know that now is the moment to reassess, rejuvenate, and begin again.
Now is the time to give yourself another chance to communicate – to sing or speak - better than you have before.
For over twenty years I worked hard on my singing in church choirs and as a cantor. I wanted the congregation to feel God’s love and Word through my voice, and I was privileged to deliver that message through a variety of beautiful hymns at Masses, weddings, funerals, and other liturgies. The purpose of my voice was to bring joy, to comfort, uplift and inspire, to sustain and encourage. Many times I was fortunate to receive feedback from others that my singing did just that. But it was not about me.
When I decided to take additional online singing lessons with my Bel Canto teacher through the Covid-19 lockdowns, I wanted to maintain and develop my voice in new ways. I longed to keep my connection to the beauty of singing alive. Music and singing was one of the ways I supported myself during an extremely dark, heavy, and difficult period locally and globally. Ironically, mine was one of many voices being silenced and locked away. I felt profound shifts in those years, and the need for a new mission was born.
After emerging from this experience, I knew that freedom was the primary reason for the human voice. This was part of the reason why I created Be Free To Sing®.
We need freedom to express ourselves without fear.
Freedom to spread hope and light in sadness.
Freedom to say “no” in the face of evil.
This is what the human voice is for.
Every new year is a chance to renew ourselves, but in truth, we can start again whenever we choose to.
Whether singing, speaking, or thinking to ourselves, we need to understand that we can use our voices for personal confidence and positive growth, which will in turn assist others to be bolder and not self-censor. Words are powerful.
Bel Canto methodology helped me to do this in illuminating new ways. You see, Bel Canto is not simply “another singing technique” but a real transformation in the way we approach the voice. It perpetually nurtures and reinforces healthy singing and speaking without our needing to do much at all! There is no complication involved, once your mind and body get used to the basics. In fact the simplicity of this method is where the magic truly happens!
Bel Canto is the complete holistic package for a healthy voice, body (your instrument), and mind. It also incorporates positive self-talk so over time you automatically adopt a new way of communicating. The constant reminder to “lift! lift! lift!” helps the brain to rise above all forms of collapse, not only in the vocal mechanism but also in life.
So why not be courageous in 2026 and elevate your singing and speaking with long-established Bel Canto wisdom?
