It’s true you know. When the days are heavy and everything seems like too much, the moment I begin to sing, everything falls away.
A lightness – a “lightheartedness” as Andrea Bocelli puts it – takes over and I am instantly transported to another time and place. Singing old hymns, classical songs, or a favourite upbeat tune changes my atmosphere and brings to life memories of people and places in my past.
While my focus is on the words, maintaining structure, and implementing all that I have learnt over the years (that is the hard work and commitment required of each singer), I always find myself longing for more honesty and freedom – digging deeper for the gold, as it were.
To appreciate freedom in singing and music, at times you may need to be alone or endure periods of darkness in the process. Singing is about exposing yourself, and that can be scary. You need to learn how to let go and give yourself permission to express a range of feelings without fear.
What are you holding on to right now? Can you spend some alone time to sing without a care? How might that feel for you? Give it a try today.
