Inner space. Mind space. Soul space. Singing space.
How you bloom in this world all starts with creating space. Pause. This needs to be a space where you feel inspired to grow your God-given gifts. In singing, we need room to breathe and expand our bodies and minds. Try this:
- Whether you are standing or sitting, just lift your sternum (breastbone) so that your posture is upright, with your shoulders back and down. Legs are hip-width apart, with feet flat on the ground.
- Exhale slowly through your mouth.
- Inhale gently via your nose.
- Do you feel your back and ribcage expand?
- Keep still at the top of your breath for a few seconds. Hold steady.
- As you do this, examine your inner world. Focus on space and stability within you.
- Now slowly release the breath via your mouth.
- What do you notice? Do you feel calmer, more grounded, peaceful?
- Repeat this exercise a few times.
Singing is not only about opening our mouths to release notes on a whim, but we first need to establish a space – a comfort zone - that will allow us to thrive in the process.
We cannot be true creatives if we feel cramped, shut down, and hampered in our bodies and souls. Humanity needs freedom – we crave it. We need artistic expression without any constriction.
That is why I believe the Bel Canto approach is such a natural and liberating way to sing. It works hand in glove with what we already have inside us as human beings – structurally and spiritually - if we pay attention to it.
As you start to learn about Bel Canto, as I did with my teacher, you eventually realise how magical and powerful it is. I say ‘eventually’ because at first your brain and mindset will want to reject it - it is counter to what most of us know about singing. But as you make room for change and stay open, you come to realise there is no need to struggle any more. Ease and freedom in the voice is at the heart of Bel Canto. It is a healing and soothing singing space.
Our voices are made to soar if we take the time to return to the basics of connecting with ourselves. It all starts with making space. This week, just notice how you use space within yourself, in your thoughts, your environment, and your music. How can you give yourself permission to enjoy free space within – and outside - yourself?
